Flip Flop Sandals
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010Flip flops were referred to as a sandal that had no back, the name flip flop comes from the sound that the sandal makes when one walks, “flip flop, flip flop.”The history of the flip flop can go as far back to Egypt, when looking at hieroglyphics and other art you will notice an Egyptian figure wearing a design close to the flip flop. However, most publications show that the flip flop were also inspired by the woven Zori or Japanese Sandal “ Jandal”. The Zori’s were used as beach wear in New Zealand in 1930. During the post war period both American and New Zealand service men returned home with the Zori’s making them popular in these areas. In 1940, John Cowie started manufacturing the plastic version of the Zori, and patented it in 1957, with the name “Jandal.”
In the European and North American military, the use of flip flops are encouraged in some branches to be worn as sanitary footwear in communal showers, thus slowing the spread of fungal infections. Today we have the plastic flip flop which is used for sanitary precautions, and is used in showers and bathrooms.
In 1956 flip flops which were also known as thongs were becoming popular during the Melbourne Olympic Games, being worn by the Australian, UK and US swim teams. The flip flop sandals became popular footwear in the Western Culture for hot days, and were the expected footwear for the beach or pool. The exercise and arch support flip flop is an excellent flip flop for the active woman who enjoys walking without the confinement of a closed shoe. These flip flops can be beneficial to you, by giving your legs, calves and buttocks a workout while walking, not to mention helping your posture.
Today, the flip flop comes in all types of materials, colors; some come with designs and bling, flat heels, high heels, slides or wedge flip flops. The rhinestone flip flop also known as the bling flip flop, will dress up any outfit, yet keeping it casual, which makes it convenient to go from play to dress. They have come a long way from the inexpensive rubber flip flop editions that were popular in the 1950’s. The women’s flip flop can also be worn as dressy sandals, which in the past were only known as a beach sandal, or worn to protect the feet. They are a comfortable, cool and stylish sandal. The leather and animal print flip flop is a fashionable and fundamental addition to any wardrobe; allowing the flip flop to be worn with capri’s, jeans, dresses, skirts or shorts. Bridal flip flops are great for that special wedding which is held on the beach, giving you the comfort and convenience while also adding that special touch to your dress or gown.
